The 2016 Solstice Soirée hosted by Sunlight Mountain Resort disc golf tournament was a successful and fun event for all. 96 players competed in the two round PDGA B-tier event on the gorgeous ski mountain near Glenwood Springs, CO. It was wet and muddy on Saturday with pretty constant rain. However no lightning stopped the tournament and there was still plenty of smiles on the players faces. Most of the scores improved on Sunday as it was a nice sunny day. The one and only junior competing, #58982 Meci Klein from Thornton, CO improved her score by 20 strokes on Sunday.
Five time World Champion #19150 Kathy Hardyman, from Colorado Springs, CO won the Pro Masters Women division. There was a tie breaker after the last round in the Pro Masters Men division, in which Bryan Maynard from Silt, CO won over local Ty Richards from Glenwood Springs who took second place. The Pro Mens division was won by #70689 Dalin Boehnke from Colorado Springs, taking home $465 for his first tournament pro win, by only one stroke over second place J.C. Kester IV from Palisade, CO.
The man with the lowest PDGA number in the tournament, signifying his longevity in the disc golf / frisbee scene, #688 Geoff Hungerford won the Pro Grand Masters division by 11 strokes over second place Martin Bohn from Heber City, Utah. The Advanced Men division was won by #45120 Lloyd Wilkins from Colorado Springs, and the Advanced Masters division was won by Dan Theisen from Morrison, CO. Dizzle Antoni from Colorado Springs won the Intermediate Men division by four strokes, while Nicole Fischer from Wheat Ridge, CO won the Intermediate Women division. Jonathon Schaab from Denver, CO and Micaela Klein from Thornton, CO won the Recreational Men and Women divisions respectively.
There were 3 aces, or hole-in-one, over the weekend. One ace was during the sanctioned competition on Saturday by Brian Morrell from Vail, CO hit the 197 ft hole 6. Two aces were hit during the Mini Disc Golf competition, one by #67310 Jonathan Rumley from Denver, CO. The other mini disc golf ace was hit by #59854 Jessie Klehfoth from Edwards, CO who also won 1st Place Advanced Women, beating the division by 6 strokes as well as the weekend long Putting Challenge and Mini Disc Golf competitions in the women's division, not to mention she also got one of the women's CTP awards!
The extra fun non-sanctioned events offered throughout the weekend, Mini Disc Golf, Putting Challenge and the Thrown Down the Mountain Accuracy Challenge provided a ton of fun for many players and also collected $365.00 which has been donated to Youth Zone, a local Glenwood Springs charity. Youth Zone is dedicated to providing opportunities for youth to be responsible, contributing members of their families and society and strives to enhance the quality of life in our communities through prevention, support, parent education and direct services.
We would like to thank Innova Champion Discs, Nite Ize, Disc Diva and the Wright Life for sponsoring this years tournament and look forward to another weekend of fun and camaraderie on the mountain, near summer solstice next year.
