The PDGA State Coordinator can designate one player to go to the USDGC each year. Last year Kyle Maute won the spot in a qualifying tournament held at Johnny Roberts. This year the qualifier will be determined through a one-round tournament at a very USDGC-style tight Colorado Heights University layout on Saturday, August the 18th at 9AM. States who send a representative to the USDGC are assigned to the Performance Edition pool of the event. The Performance Edition flight is based on how well each disc golfer shoots above their rating. Since the qualifier will not be a sanctioned event and ratings will not be determined for the round, a handicapping system will be used to determine the best score. Depending on what your current rating is (as of the August 14, 2012 PDGA ratings update) you will either be given strokes or lose strokes. An adjusted score will be used to determine the state qualifier.
Score Adjustments
875-888 subtract 5 strokes
888-900 subtract 4 strokes
901-913 subtract 3 strokes
914-926 subtract 2 strokes
927-939 subtract 1 stroke
940-952 add no strokes
953-965 add 1 stroke
966-978 add 2 strokes
979-991 add 3 strokes
992-1004 add 4 strokes
1005-1017 add 5 strokes
Example: Player A (rated 880) shots a -5 and Player B (rated 960) shoots a -10. The adjusted scores would be: Player A -5 (-5) = -10, Player B -10 (+1) = -9
In the case of a tie, a sudden death playoff would take place (no strokes given or taken in playoff).
As per the USDGC site:
All Performance Flight candidates and participants must have a PDGA Player Rating of 875 or higher, and must have a minimum of 12 PDGA Rated rounds between November 1, 2011 and October 1, 2012.
You must be a resident of Colorado to be eligible for the USDGC spot.
The entry fee will be $25. All entry fees will be used for the winning qualifier’s entry fee and travel expenses. The first $100 collected will pay for the entry fee to the USDGC. All additional money collected past the first $100 will be issued to the qualifier upon providing receipts for either airfare or hotel.
The Course
CHU will be played utilizing the stroke and distance rule that is now used at the USDGC. If you throw out of bounds, you will need to take a penalty stroke and re-throw from your initial lie. If there is any doubt as to whether you are in bounds or not, you should throw a provisional shot from the original lie.
Additional holes at CHU may be announced the day of the qualifier.
